Roadside Inspection Levels Explained

Roadside inspections are part of the trucking business, and drivers should know what to expect before they are waved into a scale house or inspection area. The more familiar the process is, the easier it is to stay calm and prepared.

Inspection levels vary. Some are driver-only checks, while others are full vehicle inspections that examine brakes, tires, lights, securement, paperwork, and log compliance. The more serious the level, the more time it usually takes and the more likely it is that a violation will surface.

Drivers can reduce problems by keeping paperwork current and performing thorough pre-trip inspections. If a truck is already in good shape before the stop, the inspection is less likely to become a production delay.

The goal is not to avoid inspectors. The goal is to be ready when the stop happens. Good roadside habits start long before the truck reaches the checkpoint.
